White or slightly yellow crystalline powder, odorless, almost tasteless, slightly bitter. Slightly hygroscopic in the air. Loses water of crystallization at 130°C to form anhydrous material, decomposes at 170°C or higher. Each gram is soluble in about 50ml of 25℃ water. More soluble in water at lower temperatures, with aqueous solution being alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol, soluble in glycerol. Citric acid or lactic acid can improve its solubility in water, but it decomposes easily when heated.
